Zhaga Book 17 approved for use by members

Posted on Wednesday March 15 2017, by Tim Whitaker

Book 17, a new specification for spotlight LED light engines (LLEs), has been approved by the Zhaga Consortium for use by Zhaga members only. Zhaga is a global lighting-industry organization that aims to standardize components of LED luminaires.

Book 17 defines LLEs with an integrated driver and a circular light-emitting surface (LES). Such LLEs are suitable for spot-lighting applications such as compact indoor luminaires.

The maximum LLE diameter is 81 mm, and the maximum height is 15 mm. The mounting-hole spacing is 35 mm, which is the same as for 50-mm-diameter Book 10 LED modules (category D50).

Rather than try to integrate an LED driver into the 50-mm-diameter Book 10 module form-factor, Zhaga decided to allow a larger LLE size in Book 17. This provides more space for a free choice of driver technology, making it easier to deal with issues such as flickering, immunity and safety.

Due to the integrated driver, the Book 17 LLEs operate using AC mains voltage. A range of LES categories is possible in Book 17, and these are the same as for Book 10.

The full Zhaga Book 17 specification is currently available only to Zhaga members, and can be downloaded from the members’ website. After a further period of around six months, the Book will be published for use by the entire lighting industry.
